Livefyre intelligence from the battlefield: Eagles at Pittsburgh...
Written by Thomas Jackson on .
It's not easy to win a game in the NFL. Especially against a team like the Steelers who are 1-2, at home, and desperate to avoid falling into a 1-3 hole in the AFC North...
This game likely shapes up as a defense-dominated affair, with both teams playing for pride and bragging rights as "Pennsylvania's Team"...

Eagles at Steelers -- Week 5
Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh (turf, outdoors)
When: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox)
Spread: Steelers by 2.5
Forecast: Temperature in mid-40s; 40 percent chance of rain; wind, WSW at 9 mph.
Records: Eagles (Overall: 3-1; NFC East: 1-0); Steelers (Overall: 1-2; AFC North: 0-0)
Past results: Two most recent meetings -- Sept. 21, 2008: Eagles 15, Steelers 6; Nov. 7, 2004: Steelers 27, Eagles 3. Series record: Eagles lead 47-27-3.
The Steelers are not the dominant run defense they have been in years past, standing only 14th in the NFL vs. the rush. Like Polamalu’s return in the secondary, though, getting back rushing linebacker James Harrison (29 ½ sacks the past three seasons) from offseason knee surgery should provide a push on the outside. LaMarr Woodley leads the team with two sacks at OLB and ILB Larry Foote leads the squad with 23 tackles. Up front, DEs Ziggy Hood, Brett Keisel and DT Casey Hampton have yet to register a tackle in the backfield. For a team used to pressuring the QB, the Steelers have just five sacks thus far.
The Steelers enter Sunday’s game just 30th in the league rushing the ball, but they get top back Rashard Mendenhall back from an ACL injury. Though Mendenhall’s presence will help, the line has not been exactly stellar in opening holes or providing protection for Roethlisberger. Maurkice Pouncey is a standout at center, but tackles Max Starks and Marcus Gilbert will require help on edge rushers Jason Babin and Trent Cole. Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks will be tested in containing Roethlisberger and covering tight end Heath Miller over the middle.
Enough from me---now for the real intelligence reports coming in from our esteemed Lifefyre correspondents.
Broncos scored 31, Jets scored 27 and Raiders scored 34. Eagles scored 14. That says it all folks. Only the blind would follow that idiot MM for 14 points a game.... Yes Vick's fumbled cost 7 or at least 3 but MM or Vick has to go. They can not co-exist.
I wonder why they are having the Halloween episodes of Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad on Oct 7th?
What the fuck was the Go with that Intention down field Screen TE pulled on Boykin in the 4th qtr too?!?!?
@Beandip That was the play where the WR for the Steelers called Boykins out before the play started.
But heck... thats what they say right?!? You give a QB enough time....the WR WILL get open.... So what the fuck? At what stage do you stop rushing Just 4 guys in favour of more coverage?!? Send a few more on a blitz because the Ben bastard is passing all over you Defence.... Kendricks couldn't mark Miller FFS... It was a shambles....
Effing Aso..... Got stung AGAIN standing up at the Line being arrogant... back shoyulder for a first down...
Surprisingly he got down into a squat next play..... He is a bum
I like Aso... but he is a liability against speed sometimes and his ball skills are not intimidating... but really... when you think about how hard it is to be a cornerback in the NFL... Nnamdi and DRC are pretty eff'n good... and I like our young guys...
@l30p1221n1 Cant say he's a liability. I mean... he shut down his side today. But he does have more trouble with speed... than bigger guys.
Honestly... I'd rather have a guy that has trouble with speed... than a guy that has trouble with size... like Shel Brown.
@TheGreatJB99 I like ASO just fine... he ain't perfect, but he's pretty damn good... everybody just sees the dollar signs in his paycheck whenever he makes a mistake or gets beat... Revis he ain't... but he ain't Dimitri Patterson either...
@l30p1221n1 I'm not ready to say Aso is the best CB the Eagles have ever had... but he's close. Shuts down his side with little help... and makes tackles all over the field.
I still say Lips was the best... with Aso and Bob Taylor and Vincent coming in at a tie for 2nd.
@Blasphemizer @l30p1221n1 He gave up two completions. One for 5 yards... one for a 1st down on a back shoulder fade that was covered perfectly.
He damn near got beat for a long TD... but it took a perfect pass... and Ben was close... but no cigar.
Also... they rolled the coverage to Boykins and DRC all day. Left Aso one on one all day.
THATS SHUT DOWN D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
I recall you gushing about speed over size at CB . .. staying in the reciever's pocket, etc . . .flopper.
@l30p1221n1 I can agree wiff you enough there, but if he is a liability against speed, then we shouldn't leave him one-on one...Simple as that...
@Blasphemizer at the same time... he can nullify speed too... when he gets his body position inside... something like that... I kinda just think we need to get to the QB a little better...
@Blasphemizer @l30p1221n1 Butceptfo he did it all day... in one on one coverage.
Shut down CB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!1
@l30p1221n1 Sorry...But when he trailing a guy at all, he's usually fucked...And it doesn't matter if you can jam as well as he can, you're not always going to keep the guy in front of you...He can't handle wiffout help over the top, so he shouldn't be paid as though he can...
@Blasphemizer @Beandip Yeah but... Ike always is all over the guy... so its hard to call him.
I likey Ike!!1!!!!!!!!1!!!!!
He reminds me of Aso.
I thought the defense looked pretty good though... if anything, I just thought we didn't bring enough pressure from the second level... and I know that is our basic scheme, but I thought the scenario was good to bring more pressure from the linebackers on a number of occasions...
@Blasphemizer I wish I was I was worth12 millz a year because I was so awesome at football.
And another thing... has DRC ever made a tackle on a run play? I mean... Aso is in there constantly making plays vs the run... but DRC... never gets in there.
Why can one be so active... whilst the other just stands around?
@TheGreatJB99 I saw him pull up on a couple hits too... where he could've put his hat on the ball... but maybe if he had a deal in place he would take more risks with his body... or maybe he wouldn't
@l30p1221n1 Thats what I'm thinking. He just waiting for that FA pay day that he's gonna get.
One biiiiig positive from this game . . . that call on I think 4th down. The one where Peanut and Macdaddy were benched for our bigger recievers. Yall saw that, right?
If Coach Marty can find a throw to Mardy or a mismatch with a two-back look . . . that'll pay dividends later.
They should just run it right behind him . . . bang it right of center, take our gassed-for-four quarters left side of the O-line out of the play completely.
@Nuuuuuuudler They didn't bother running crossbuck to him when they managed to fool the Giants with it a couple times last week...I thought for sure they would...
Whats up with DRC? The guy damn near got beat for a long TD when Wallace couldnt pull that ball in... he CLEARLY had an INT at the GL that wasnt called on 3rd down that would have given them a 1st and GL.... and he gave up that soft slant on 3rd and 8.
I dunno about that guy. We need something better.
If only we had two Aso's.......
@TheGreatJB99 I hope this is a red herring, otherwise, you really need to hop off of Aso's dick...
@Blasphemizer @Nuuuuuuudler And you knew Nate was gonna be awesome this year... cause moonbean said he sucked.
@Nuuuuuuudler @TheGreatJB99 Nate has been playing really well...Easily the best safety in the division...
@TheGreatJB99 They both played bad.... But not as bad as Kendricks this game.... He really stunk it up
@TheGreatJB99 Glad to see he wasn't hurt to bad and went back in the game tho... Looked like he rolled his ankle
