I'm going to miss Asante Samuel's Big Plays...but not his baggage,,,

Written by Thomas Jackson on .

Asante (the "President") is good--- he can still play cornerback in the NFL at a high level, despite the constant presence of a C3-C4 cervical vertebrae "stinger" (pinched nerve in layman's speak) which nullifies his ability or will to tackle guys who outweigh him by 50 pounds on average...

But it is time for the Eagles to let him go...

We would be lucky to get a 4th round Draft pick in exchange for him... but he's got to go.

asante

Asante Samuel is open to a contract restructuring if it leads to a trade that could land him in a better situation.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Samuel won’t let his $9.5 million base salary this season be an obstacle to getting a deal done. The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to generate considerable interest in Samuel as the draft nears with a host of clubs in need of help at cornerback.

The Eagles would prefer to keep Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha (of course, they are willing to make tackles!) and probably are working to package Samuel.

“We (feel) like corner is a position of strength right now," general manager Howie Roseman said. "But at the same time when you talk to teams around the league, you’re talking about maybe some positions that you have a strength and maybe that they have a weakness. You try to see if that’s a match whether that’s cornerback or anywhere else."

“We’ve promised Asante - or really all of our players - that we're going to make sure that we’re giving them all the information and they know about it. We’ve been in constant communication with him and have apprised him of things that have been going on.”

And that's the Kiss of Death from Mr. Goldfinger....

Asante is as good as gone...

And my Mach-skiddley just went up 40 points in value because I've got cornerbacks being drafted in my "Eagles 10" picks...

But this is the part of the NFL I hate, and which Brizer has alluded to in poetic terms--- individuals are relegated to mere inventory and commodities. Oh, it happens in our lives, too, but the depreciation of pro athletes at the NFL level is greatly accelerated beyond our mere mortal reference points as fans.  Imagine--- Samuel is done in Philly at 31.  At age 31, I was just getting started!

So it goes. It is a young man's sport... yet ironically ruled by old guys.

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora disputes a report that the Lions are interested in Eagles CB Asante Samuel.

The Lions may very well have interest in Samuel, but they're not going to play along with the Eagles' reported third-round asking price right now. Per LaCanfora, the Tennesseee Titans do have "some interest," but nothing is imminent on the trade front. The Eagles are going to have to drop their compensation demands to move their high-priced cornerback.

Updating a previous item, Fox Sports Detroit's Mike O'Hara now reports there's "not a chance" the Lions will trade for CB Asante Samuel.O'Hara had previously reported Owners' Meetings "buzz" that the Lions remained interested. He's now reversing course after hearing from a reliable source. Samuel's age (31) and salary ($9.9 million) as well as the Eagles' asking price are all stumbling blocks to a potential trade, especially since Lions GM Martin Mayhew prefers to acquire younger players prior to their second contract.

Notable transactions in the last few hours...

---Denver re-signed OLB/DE Jason Hunter to a 1-year deal, terms undisclosed...
---San Diego re-signed NT Antonio Garay (age 32) to a 2-year contract, terms undisclosed...
---Packers signed DT/DE Anthony Hargrove (Saints) to a 2-year deal, terms undisclosed...
---Miami re-signed RB Steve Slayton to a 1-year contract, terms undisclosed...
---Eagles re-signed OT King Dunlap to a 1-year contract, terms undisclosed...

AND DISTURBING BREAKING NEWS--- Eagles All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters ruptured an Achilles tendon while working out in Texas on Tuesday... he will fly to Philadelphia for surgery to be performed on April 2, 2012... Updates and prognosis reports to follow...

Agent Alvin Keels tells PFT via email that the Eagles have reached out regarding former Chargers left tackle Marcus McNeill.

Keels said it’s too early to say whether the Eagles’ interest in McNeill is serious.

If McNeill is healthy, it should be.  But the question is whether McNeill’s neck has healed after an injury that ended his 2011 — and his career in San Diego — prematurely.

That's what I like hearing, hopefully PFT isn't blowing premature smoke like they sometimes do.

Adam Caplan is tying to convince me Bell will be a good fit here. However, I see a guy who is still hanging out there when teams really need OL help. I don't know, I have more confidence in M McNeil iffen he can stay healthy. What about checking on Ryan Harris? Didn't our guys try to fix his back?

@Kenemeka I think the Broncos re-signed him, not sure though.

Holy FUCK this sucks! Why Jason, Why!!!?!?! There is no bright side to look on in this matter, we just lost the best LT in the league. We have gotten so accustomed to him being there protecting the life of Mike Vick. And when I say life I mean it! D Ware, J.P.P,  Orakpo, Tuck! I think I just soiled my pants. I hope you a speedy recovery Jason. FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No worries ATV - you're in a Floss-Free Zone.

Won't start up there 'till the serious Spring-Breakers start down (Easter Week).

Then you'd have the cleanest teeth.......

Bell was blocking for Fitz and Jackson last year.  Peters was blocking for Vick and Shady.  I'm sold.

Now that I've recovered from the shock and disappointment , I must say those early Machers are in trouble

@Kenemeka If they sing a free agent LT, I don't think their draft board changes all that much. If they don't sign one then we'll know our Machers are toast.

@go_green Which could mean the Eagles might be looking add a talented tight end high in the draft? ya neva know!  Dwayne Allen or Orson Charles would look mighty nice in Midnight Green.

@Jerky that would be great.

@go_green  @Jerky Not in the first round mind you, but one of our seconds maybe? Reid may try to copy what NE and GB are doing on O and load up on with some quality tight ends. Some food for thought at least...

I'm more worried about  the important stuff like JB's butt cheek.

Coach Reid and Co. will come up with a solution - not to worry Birds are in good hands.

Rupturing an Achilles hurts like a MFer I've heard.  Getting around on foot is going to be a struggle for that big ole' man!

He could pay me five grand a week to push him around in a wheelchair, I would be willing to do that for him.

The Peters injury is a blow to our superbowl run this year BUT . . . is also an opportunity to find out just how good and solidified the rest of the line really is.  If LG - RT step up and pull their weight, Peters' understudy will do okay.  If not . . . yeah we're screwed.
