Stand and Deliver...the Brizer & Brozer report on the state of Eagles QB play...
This is a revealing look at a difficult issue now facing serious fans of Eagles football. The 2012 season hinges on a lot of moving parts meshing in a common direction. But the direction of the quarterback position is at a crossroads. Equaly involved with this positional challenge is the offensive playcalling of the coaching staff.
To put it simply: Are the Eagles going to conform to a "stand and deliver" style of QB play to best utilize their catch-and-run receivers, and mix in a higher ratio of running game playcalls--- or are they going to allow their QB#1 to just "wing it" as a solo artist, and adjust to changing game conditions and defensive pressures on the fly?
Some argue that you can't make Mike Vick into a true West Coast Offense quarterback, and that he's more effective as a "wild card offense" leader...
Fortunately, we were treated to the combined brainpower of Brizer and Brozer, who formed an impromptu panel this past weekend to discuss the issue.
GK Brizer (left) and Brozer, fellow Bored members in good standing, held an impromptu summit conference this past weekend on the state of the Eagles QB...
First up is Brizer:
Most of the [QB} "errors" I witnessed Thursday night are correctible. Coach Marty didn't do Vick any favors with a lousy 80/20 ratio. I just did not like 80% of the plays he called for Vick. That said,..scrutinize this pre game assessment that I posted just a few days ago:
Leo Pizzini seems to think as I do. Vick is key,..and TBT,.I have much less confidence in him this year as last,..up to now...There are some seemingly less important metrics to most,.but not I,.that Vick needs to absolutely improve upon.,..
They are:
1) Pocket presence,...have a sense of where you are,..at all times.
2) Seek out passing lanes.,...You don't need to be 6'5" to "see" receivers.
3) Utilize all your resources,..TE, RB, FB, WRs
4) Stop telegraphing plays,...be cool.
5) Practice deception ,...a QBs close friend.
The other stuff (deficiences) are well known,.so I won't bore the BORED. You knuckleheads may also want to revisit the LUPES synopsis of my TC review. Methinks,.in that short period of time,..I was able to capture,..wiff intense modesty,..a decent pic of your 2012 Eagles. TBT,..my concern is really one--- Is Vick correctible,..and/or can Coach Marty perk up,..and utilize his skill set more efficiently?
Moreover,..I think somebody needs to kill Kenny. I need one volunteer,.....GK.
Now the Brozer perspective on the State of the Eagles QB Mix:
I think it's always good to have the 3 categories of QB's covered with your 3 guys:
1) your starter,....the guy that gives u the best chance to win the SB
2) the wiley vet,…. that didn't quite cut it as a starter, but has tons of experience, and has seen it all. This is the guy you hope can go 2-1 if your starter misses a few games.
3) your developmental guy,....the guy you hope becomes a future star, and has tons of potential and natural gifts.
Vick is 1. Foles is 3.
What is Kafka ? He's kind of a 2, without the experience. He's NOT a 3. Never will be a 1.
TE (Edwards) is a pure #2 if ever there was one. HAHA ! That was funny !
On Vick: He wasn't out there much Thursday night, but when he was, he looked like the exact same player that was out there last year. Escaping the pocket too quickly....NOT COOL in the pocket. It's weird to use Foles as an example, and Thursday night may end up being the hi-light of his career,....but having said that, he just looks comfortable in the pocket,....he looks COOL....even when the pocket is collapsing. Vick is not displaying that comfort level back there.
The season hinges on Vick...not Foles.....but Vick needs to be different than what he was last year, and last night. I think his chances of doing so,....to throw a ballpark figure out there,.....is 7.57004 %.
I'll be more specific with those chances after the 3rd game.
On Foles: that first Foles TD throw was more impressive when you wartch the replay:
he was running full speed (for him) to the right........and threw kind of back across his body to the middle of the field away from where his momentum was carrying him.
So that was all arm, and not much leg. And it still was right on the #'s, with a lot of velocity.
On another Foles completion: the impressive part of that pass, was not the completion to the wide open guy,.....it was the way he sidestepped the pressure in the pocket.
COOLNESS in the pocket. THAT'S.......what I like to see.
the only ting I'm wartching.....is how Vick handles himself with the blitz, and on 3rd down on obvious passing sitchs.
His first test is a fail. No need for him to flee the pocket. He had time to step up, set up, and throw.
Speaking of Leo Pizzini, here’s Leo with a quick take on the Trent Edwards vs. Mike Kafka picture (although the view is more complicated now by Kafka’s left hand injury):
“Since Bri brought up
Interesting point there… the Eagles are a catch-and-run offense by design. Keep that in mind as we evaluate the current QB situation in Philly. The premium value is firmly based upon pocket presence and accuracy of the dink and dunk--- and Kafka still has value in the Eagles system.
The days of the chuck and duck and wild scrambles by “winging it” are no longer a design option. Defenses around the league have put a stop to Vick’s old freelance style.
Footnote comment from the Great JB: “ I thought Kafker played pretty well. He threw some balls away... ran around a lil... and made some good throws including that slant to DamJohn that could have been a big play. Basically... he looks like a good b.u. QB. I give him a break on that awful turnover since on the blind turn he had a guy right in his face. Tom Brady wouldn’t have made something happen on that pressure. That said... Kafker must eat that... or better yet throw it away... although it’s easy for me to question that in hindsight since I didn’t have a 6' 7'' 340 lb black man growling in my face.”
